A few days ago, The Wall Street Journal examined a Barclay’s Wealth report that revealed that among wealthy investors, women are more likely to invest in real estate than men. Specifically:
- Almost half (49%) of the women surveyed consider real estate to be a less risky investment than stocks, compared with 37% of men.
- 44% of women surveyed find buying property more enjoyable than investing in other asset classes. Only 28% of men feel the same way. While 34% of men are likely to invest in real estate indirectly through a fund, only 14% of women would prefer this approach.
The National Association of Realtors reports that 60 percent of Realtors are women, so real estate doesn’t seem to be simply a preference of wealthy women, but is desirable for most women. The typical Realtor is female, 52, married and college-educated. So both the buyer and seller sides of real estate are female-dominated. Does this surprise you? Is it true in your experience?
The comments in response to the article in The Wall Street journal suggested a variety of reasons women invest in real estate – from wanting more shoe space to believing that investments should be made in tangible products. What do you think?
What is it about women and real estate?
