Hot Market: Southern Cal Leads the Way to Recovery

Yes, prices are down. Yes, there are a lot of foreclosures involved. And, yes, Southern California s sales are going through the roof. DataQuick.com reports sales up in the double digits for the second month running. Sales are up ranging from 10 to 48 percent across the region.

Rates Drift Lower on Reports of Economic Weakness; Others Point to Progress in Housing Market

McLEAN, VA — Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE) today released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) in which the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 6.35 percent with an average 0.7 point for the week ending September 04, 2008, down from last week when it averaged 6.40 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.46 percent.

A new study by Statistics Canada says 18 per cent of people who live in urban neighbourhoods in Canada are afraid to walk the streets after dark. The study, of people who live in communities of more than 50,000 people, represents about three million Canadians.

A study done by a pair of Canadian psychologists demonstrates how the law works. What the psychologists discovered is that people at a racetrack, after placing a bet, are more confident of their chance of winning than they were immediately before placing the bet. Keep in mind that nothing about the horse’s chances of winning changed. It’s the same horse, on the same track, in the same field of horses; but in the mind of the bettor, the horse’s chances of winning improve once they purchased a ticket. Although this may be a bit puzzling at first, the reason has to do with the law of consistency.

Condo Trends: Tampa Pendings Up for 2nd Month

Buyers on Florida’s Gulf Coast are coming out of the woodwork to grab up condominiums left over from the Sunshine State’s housing boom of years past. While prices have dropped year over year by 13 percent, pending sales have outpaced 2007’s rate for two consecutive quarters. The latest jump was by 4 percent for condo sellers in the Tampa/Petersburg area.
