With the federal election behind us, housing industry groups are now pushing the government to address issues that didn’t get any attention during the campaign. The Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) says it is pleased with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s election promise to provide a tax credit of up to $5,000 for first-time home buyers, but it wants the government to look at the long-overdue issue of indexing the GST rebate thresholds.

While housing has not taken centre stage in the Canadian election, issues such as the economy and the environment have produced a lot of promises from the major political parties — and many of the promises are designed to woo homeowners’ votes. A recent survey for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation showed that Canadians are wary of election promises. By a two-to-one margin, we’re more likely to believe in the existence of Bigfoot than in the validity of pledges made by politicians on the election trail.

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty assured reporters that “there is no bubble in the Canadian housing sector” recently, on a day when the Canadian Real Estate Association reported the first drop in average house prices since January 1999.
